Ruby-throated Hummingbird
Ruby-throated Hummingbird
I was patiently waiting for this Ruby-throated Hummingbird to show up at my window, as she and her small group have been doing for the past weeks. These birds are so fast, you can barely see their wings when flying.
I waited for her hand holding my Nikon. I would only take my eye from the camera’s viewfinder briefly to adjust aperture to compensate the constant light changes, hoping she wouldn’t appear while I was adjusting settings.
And there she was. My eye was there and she materialized instantly in front of the flower. In less than a second she stabilized, inserted her bill into the flower, sucked the nectar, pulled off one inch, aimed herself to her exit by backing up another inch, and flew away.
I took four photos during that second. This is the third photo, taken just before she exits vertically.

Hummingbirds are a tough capture. Great timing & set up on this shot!
Thanks! My comment above is in response to your post. You encourage me to explain things.
Amazing! Your story behind the photo. All that in a split second. Nature … she moves fast! Great writing, btw.
